Nate Berneking will lead the morning session (9:00 a.m. -11:30 a.m.) to review clergy tax issues , including filling status, compensation, housing allowance, and progress reports on any pending legislation or legal developments.

The afternoon session (1:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.) will feature Brent Messick and Kelly Williams from the Church of the Resurrection. They will offer insights and guidance for churches of all sizes regarding financial best practices to grow and sustain effective ministry. The presentation will cover the basic processes, tools, priorities and pitfalls of financial planning and oversight in the local church. Topics will include:  annual budgeting process, stewardship campaigns, financial management and monthly financial statements, monthly budget review process, governance committee role and responsibilities, importance of internal auditing, and designated funds and restricted assets.


Presenters Biographies: 

Nate Berneking: 

Nate is the Director of Financial and Administrative Ministries of the Missouri Annual Conference. He served as the Senior Pastor of the United Methodist Church of Green Trails and the Pastor of Spiritual Formation for The Gathering. Before seminary, Nate worked as an attorney in a large St. Louis law firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions, general business matters and entertainment law. Nate is a graduate of Saint Louis University (98′), Saint Louis University School of Law (01′) and Candler School of Theology at Emory University (07′). When he isn’t serving churches, he enjoys fishing, hunting, time with family and occasional adventures in the developing world.

 

Brent Messick:

Brent is the Managing Executive Director of Operations and Chief Financial Officer at Church of the Resurrection. He oversees the following ministries: Stewardship and Generosity, Finance & Accounting, Facilities, I.T., Worship and Event Technical Production, Human Resources, Catering & Food Services, and the café and bookstore operations.

He currently serves on the Great Plains Conference Council on Finance and Administration and the Investment Committee. Previously, Brent has over 25 years of business experience, with his B.A. and M.B.A.
