If you have kids then you know there are some conversations that are more difficult to have than others – conversations around topics such as bullying, internet safety, handling emotions, and more. And while these conversations can seem awkward, they are important and shouldn’t be avoided. New Awakening UMC in St. Louis, MO has set out to help parents talk to their kids about these sticky situations in fun and engaging ways.
In August of 2024, the Foundation was honored to present a ministry grant to New Awakening UMC to help fund a new initiative called “That’s the Norm Way!” to help elementary-aged students learn about challenging topics. With the help of its mascot, Norm the Bear, children have a safe and engaging platform to talk about important issues.
“We are excited to introduce ‘That’s the Norm Way’ as a unique approach to addressing sensitive topics with elementary school children. By combining educational content with interactive activities and the charm of Norm the Bear, we aim to create a safe and supportive environment for children to explore these important issues.” – Pastor Cheree Trent Mills, New Awakening UMC
Since the beginning of the program, Norm the Bear and his team of facilitators have engaged with children in various venues such as the St. Louis Zoo and the Missouri History Museum. Each interactive assembly includes videos, activity sheets, and engaging discussions based on input from parents and designed to capture the attention of young students. So the next time they find themselves in a challenging spot, they’ll know exactly what to do… because that’s the Norm Way!
