Bringing the Community Together

In the summer of 2024, Weston United Methodist Church received a Missouri United Methodist Foundation ministry grant for $2,500. Those funds were used to purchase new AV equipment such as a laptop, 85″ flatscreen TV, soundbar, and speakers to help enhance various community events hosted by the church. Some of these events included an Author’s Fair and a Black Ancestors’ Awareness Campaign presentation about their Civil Rights tour of the south. Both events brought members of the community into the church.

Perhaps the most exciting example of how Weston UMC is using this grant to reach their community, is the way they have combined their new technology with genuine invitation and connection to host a monthly Karaoke and Pizza night.

Karaoke and Pizza began in the summer of 2023 when a young man with autism mentioned to a church member that he was bored with the social opportunities in town. Other than school and the bars, there weren’t a lot of social outings to choose from. Karaoke and Pizza seemed like a simple idea to help young adults with disabilities in the surrounding community have a place where they could come together and have fun. Originally planning to host different events, Weston UMC saw how popular Karaoke and Pizza was, and it stuck!

At one of the monthly gatherings, Weston UMC was able to invite workers from the Farmer’s House. This business is a country-store business that provides employment and training opportunities for people with disabilities, which is another valuable connection for these young adults.
